Is using Nitrous Oxide as a turbo boost in cars ?

Hey everyone,
As a kid playing NFS I just assumed it to be real, then never thought about it. Now I'm replaying NFS Underground and just realised how crazy it seems. Pressing a button and flames coming out of your exhaust and getting a brief speed boost.

To what degree (if any) is this real?
